My Favourite Ways To Bounce Back From Stress

As I head further into my 20’s I’ve come to realise there is going to be very few times in my life where I don’t have a million things going on. After I graduate there will be the stress of job hunting, moving out and starting a new job. Savouring the few days or weeks after a busy or stressful time in your life will be bliss, and help you prepare for the next hurdle life throws at you. I have a few ways to refresh my mind and mood after a stressful event, most of which I’ll be doing over the next couple of days/weeks before next semester starts at uni!

Usually I start by catching up on sleep. Even when I’m stressed, I’m quite good at getting enough sleep because I know I’m a nightmare without it. But how much better is sleep when you know you’ve got nothing to wake up to the next morning? You can roll over and fall asleep again for an extra hour – guilt free. Generally, my dogs won’t let me sleep in too long so I’ll take them either to the beach or their favourite field for a run around! Getting fresh air wins over air-conditioned libraries or lecture theatres any day! Because most of my stress comes from uni, I spend a lot of time hunched over my laptop staring at a screen.

Doing something creative helps get my mind off of technology and gets inspiration and new ideas flowin’! I’ve been drawing a lot lately, and playing around with more creative photography too. I’ve been really into cooking lately as a stress reliever, so now that exams are over I’ve got some time to try new recipes. The best part about that? If any of them go well, you’ll be the first to know! I’m a very goal-oriented person, so once I’ve ticked something major off of my list, I like to make new goals. Recently I said to myself that if I did an hour of exercise each day, at the end of every fortnight I would reward myself with something. So far, so good.

Pampering myself sounds so cliché, but I love it. To get my skin back to its prime, I take time in the evening to use all my potions and lotions as a relaxing step before bed. I’m also getting a hair cut next week, and had a massage this past weekend. Bliss! Seeing friends has been nice lately! I have some friends that I see a few times a week, and during exams I desperately missed them. It’s been so nice catching up with them again.

Last, but not least – spring clean. Or mid-winter clean, but the weather lately has been so warm and spring-like that it’s kinda making me feel like summer is on its way. (Disclaimer: it’s not). Today I cleaned my room from top to bottom, fresh sheets, clean makeup brushes, a bit of a wardrobe sort out – all things that make me feel a little bit calmer. There is something so refreshing about sitting on your bed, all windows open with the sun pouring in. I can even hear the birds and leaves rustling! So calming.
