10 Life Lessons I Learnt in 2016

A comprehensive list of the life lessons I learnt in 2016! Enjoy ~

Don’t hold a grudge.

It’s really hard when someone has wronged us, or made us upset to forgive and forget but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I learnt last year to leave negative energies alone and not hold on to any bad feelings towards people.

A positive attitude can turn any situation around.

I really tried last year to have a more positive attitude in a lot of situations. Whether it’s a stressful day at work or just a bad day in general – staying in a positive head space and seeing the good through the bad really helps.

Friends come and go.

Losing friends isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially when you’re able to look back and see it as something that needed to happen. I am going to meet a lot of people in my life, and I’m not going to stay friends with every single one of them – and that’s ok!

Sleep is more important than Netflix.

In 2016, I vowed to get more sleep. I quickly realised that binge watching Netflix shows is not a sure fire way to get zzz’s in. I also very quickly realised that OITNB can wait, and sleeping for more than 5 hours will do me wonders.

Passion means more than talent.

You can have all the talent in the world, but without passion it’s never going to take you anywhere. I am so proud of 2016 Lyds for starting this blog and along the way I have really come to see how passionate I am about writing. I love taking photos, I have a passion for creative outlets and I’m so lucky that there is this platform on which I can express it however I want to! Sometimes it was hard, sometimes I had nothing to write about but I am so into creating content for people to read and enjoy that I have ended up with something that’s pretty successful at this point – despite the hardships.

If something feels wrong, it probably is.

Vibes are such a big influence during my decision making process! When it comes to applying for jobs, taking certain uni papers or taking on a new opportunity – it it doesn’t feel ~right~ it usually isn’t. I’m going to carry this on into 2017, I think it’s so important to listen to your gut instinct!

Celebrate the small wins.

There is so much focus on the big things in life – graduation, landing the dream job and moving out of home. Seeing as none of these things happened for me in 2016, I learnt to celebrate the small wins in life such as cutting my metre long hair off to shoulder length (for the first time since I was 8!), winning top service award at uni for my final year and opening up to new people.

I don’t have to get along with everyone.

Being known as “the girl who can get along with anyone” isn’t always a positive. If everyone loves you, you’re probably a bit of a pushover (soz not soz). There are always going to be people who you don’t click with, whether it’s because of opposing beliefs, differing personalities or just negative vibes. What’s important is that I don’t dwell on these things or let them negatively impact my life. There are going to be people at work and in general life that I don’t get along with – but that doesn’t mean that there has to be any bad blood.

It’s okay to stand up for myself.

Following on from my previous point, it is so okay to stand up for myself. It’s not a big deal to call someone out if their being a dick, and it’s even more okay to remove myself from that situation. Not a single person in the world has the right to make you feel inferior so make sure you’re standing up for yourself at all times girl! (or boy). You gotta stand tall in your own corner, cause sometimes – you’re all you’ve got.

I am kind, smart and funny.

After being told some pretty mean things by someone who evidently didn’t know my personality at all – it took pretty much all of 2016 to realise that I am all 3 of the above. Knowing your self worth is one of the most powerful tools you can take into 2017, so I am glad I tucked this one under my belt in 2016!

Thanks so much for reading my life lessons! I hope you enjoyed, and as always, love Lyd x
